Monsoon Health Guide: Staying Safe During Rainy Season

The monsoon brings welcome relief from the heat, but the damp weather and standing water can also create conditions for illness. A little extra care keeps you and your family well through the season.

Common monsoon health concerns

Warm, wet weather can increase the spread of waterborne illnesses, mosquito-borne infections and fungal skin problems. Contaminated food and water are frequent culprits, and humidity can make existing respiratory issues feel worse.

Simple ways to stay safe

  • Drink safe water — boiled, filtered or sealed bottled water
  • Eat freshly cooked, hot meals and avoid cut fruit left in the open
  • Wash hands well before eating and after being outdoors
  • Empty containers that collect rainwater to stop mosquitoes breeding
  • Use mosquito nets or repellents, especially around dawn and dusk
  • Keep skin clean and dry to avoid fungal infections
  • Carry a raincoat or umbrella and change out of wet clothes promptly

Protecting your family

Children and older family members may need extra attention during the rains. Keep living spaces dry and well ventilated, store food covered, and watch for early signs of illness such as fever, stomach upset or a persistent cough.

When to get checked

If a fever, severe stomach upset, or symptoms that do not settle appear, it is best to have them looked at early rather than waiting.
